The studio

A quiet room, one big window,
and time to get it right.

Peak & Shutter opened above a print shop on Tai Ping Shan Street in the spring of 2014. Adrian had spent nine years shooting weddings across Hong Kong and Macau and wanted something slower: a small studio where a family could come in, sit by the window, and leave with a handful of pictures that felt like them rather than a catalogue.

The room hasn't changed much since. There is one tall north-facing window that does most of the work, a few plain linen and paper backdrops in stone and off-white, and a kettle that is almost always on. We shoot on daylight, occasionally a soft bounce when the sky over the harbour turns flat, and never the harsh studio strobes that flatten a face.

Most of our work is close to home: newborn and hundred-day sittings for young families in Sheung Wan and Kennedy Town, three-generation portraits before Lunar New Year, graduation photos from HKU up the hill, and headshots for the small design and law practices that fill the walk-ups around Hollywood Road. We also do quiet, respectful shoots for older parents whose children want a proper picture of them while there is still time.

We are a team of three, we answer our own phone, and we still hand every retouched file over on a proper archival print if you would like one. If you want a big glossy production, we are probably not your studio. If you want to look like yourself on a good day, come up the stairs.

How a sitting goes

Four steps, no surprises.

01

A short chat

Tell us who's coming, what it's for and roughly when. We suggest a time when the window light is kindest.

02

The sitting

You settle in, we put the kettle on, and we shoot at your pace. Bring your own clothes and anything meaningful.

03

You choose

Within ten days a private gallery lands in your inbox. You pick the frames you love; we hand-edit each one.

04

Prints, if you want

Download your files, or let us make archival prints and simple frames at our print shop downstairs.

The people behind the lens

Three of us, and we're usually all here.

Adrian Lam
Founder & Lead Photographer

Started the studio in 2014 after years shooting weddings. Has an eye for the moment just after everyone thinks the picture is over.

Priscilla Yeung
Studio Manager & Editor

Runs the diary, greets every family and edits every gallery. She's the reason your files look natural and your booking runs on time.

Marcus Ho
Assistant Photographer

Joined us in 2021 and shoots most of our headshot and graduation sittings. Patient with shy toddlers and nervous first-timers alike.

What families tell us

Kind words from up and down the lane.

Three generations of us squeezed into that little room and somehow it felt calm. Grandma even laughed. The prints are on the wall in Tai Po now.

Booked a headshot on my lunch break from the office on Queen's Road. Marcus had me in and out in forty minutes and the files were ready by Thursday. No fuss.

We came for our son's hundred-day photos and Priscilla was so patient when he decided to cry for the first half hour. The gallery made us tear up a little.
